A  kitchen is now – more than ever – the centre of a home.  Being the central focus for many home buyers, Selba is a very busy place to work! We spoke with Consultant, Pauline Black, and got the 411 on up-to-the-minute kitchen trends.

It’s true that the more things change, the more they stay the same.  White painted traditional doors still dominate.  Earth tones still rock, mind the pun.

However, there’s plenty of room to improve upon the tried n’ true: with soothing neutral colours, they are great for mixing and matching.  According to Pauline, “We’re seeing people mixing base cabinets and uppers and also trying different cabinet finishes and styles on the islands.”

Some other kitchen trends:

• Waterfall edges (extending the countertop down to the floor on one side for an uber-modern look)

• Contemporary slab doors in high gloss laminates are particularly popular in condos.

• LED puck lighting for task areas, and illuminated shelves for showing off prized glassware.

• Drawer cabinets in bathrooms for easy storage.

• Unique use of materials.  Try Swarovski Crystal door pulls and mirrored panels to add a glamorous look to your kitchen.

• In appliances, the industrial-look is in, and cabinetry is ordered to fit snugly, not to conceal with panels.  Stainless hood fans are big, as well as pairing fridge and freezer side-by-side.

These ideas don’t even begin to describe some of the amazing innovations inside the cabinets. All manner of pull-outs and accessories can help make storage and daily cleanup a breeze! Truly, the sky’s the limit when designing the most important room in your home.
