Current style trends in home décor include Moroccan inspiration and the idea that everything old is new again.

The mention of Morocco conjures up images of exotic culture and flair. Vivid colours with bold patterns can make their way from Northern Africa into your home through various décor elements.

Two of the biggest areas in the home, where this style can be commonly found, include the kitchen and bathroom, primarily inspired by textiles and tile designs. Moroccan design is characterized by intricate tile work mosaics known as zillij. These vibrant geometric patterns enhance a kitchen backsplash or bathroom floor.

Reclaimed wood is being used in a myriad of ways. as well. Old beams can create a rustic look for a kitchen ceiling or floor; old wood doors can be refinished and repurposed in the kitchen at your island top, table surface or cabinet doors.  Reclaimed wood can be used as wall panelling, framed and used as a headboard, or planks can be cut down and used as stair treads.

Old pieces of wood can help with keeping the home organized, being used to create shelving or by serving as an anchor for hooks and knobs that help organize areas like the mudroom.

Though reclaimed wood is quite popular when it comes to décor; there is no shortage of materials to be recycled or upcycled. Glass artists have reshaped old wine and beer bottles into beautiful pieces like serving dishes and drinking glasses. Even decorative pillows can be made using fibres from recycled plastics. Burlap, which has been quite trendy recently, can be upcycled and used as a chic sack or basket; and antique chests and suitcases can be made over into furniture pieces, like benches and stools.

Reducing, reusing and recycled materials are now making their mark in homes as décor that’s eco-friendly and a little creative. A little out of the box thinking (or Pinterest boards) can go a long way in creating a unique sense of style for your home.
